Biographical / Historical
David E. Sweet (1933-1984) was the foundeing president of Metropolitan State University. He received degrees from Drury College and Duke University, where he taught political science and advised the campurs Christian Science organization. In 1971, while serving as Vice Chancellor of the Minnesota State College System, Sweet became the founding President of Minnesota Metropolitan State College, an innovative an non-traditional institution that later became Metropolitan State University. In 1977, he left Minnesota to lead Rhode Island College as its President before he died in 1984.
